Popunder

An ad that opens behind the active browser window — massive volume, low cost, low intent.

A popunder is an ad that opens a full page behind the active browser window, so the user discovers it only after closing or minimizing what they were viewing. It is one of the cheapest formats in existence, sold on CPM or CPV at fractions of a cent, delivering massive raw volume with correspondingly low user intent.

Buyers use popunders where the funnel can absorb cold traffic: sweepstakes, downloads, mVAS, and casino landings with aggressive hooks. Since the 'creative' is the landing page itself, testing means testing landers, not banners. The economics only work with ruthless source and target filtering — without daily blacklisting of junk zones, a popunder campaign will happily spend the whole budget on bot windows nobody ever sees.

In buyer speech

Popunder test on that Tier-3 geo cost $40 for 60k impressions — two deposits already, so I'm whitelisting the top five zones.
