Brand Bidding
Bidding on a brand's name in search ads, either by the brand to protect its own results or by affiliates and competitors to intercept people already looking for it.
Searches for a casino's own name are the warmest traffic the brand has. When affiliates or competitors bid on those terms in search ads, they buy a click the brand would otherwise have received for free, and the operator often ends up paying an affiliate CPA for a player who was already looking for it. Most operator affiliate terms forbid bidding on the brand without written permission.
Brand protection is the operator's answer: bidding on its own name defensively, monitoring who advertises on brand queries, enforcing affiliate terms and filing trademark complaints with the ad platform. For affiliates, brand bidding is a grey channel: it converts, but where the program forbids it, it breaks the agreement and commissions can be clawed back.
In buyer speech
“The affiliate was bidding on our brand plus 'bonus', so we were paying CPA for players who had typed our name.”
