Engagement Rate
The percentage of an audience that interacts with content or an ad.
Engagement rate is the percentage of an audience that interacts with content or an ad — clicks, likes, comments, shares or video watch-through relative to impressions or followers. It quantifies whether material actually resonates, and ad platforms fold engagement signals into ad ranking, meaning engaging creatives literally pay less per result in the auction.
Buyers use engagement rate as an early creative filter on Meta, TikTok and KWAI: a video with strong hook retention and interaction earns cheaper CPMs before conversion data even matures. It is also the standard sanity check on influencer deals — an account with big followers and thin engagement is bought or dead. The trap is optimizing engagement for its own sake; comment-bait creatives can engage wildly and never deposit.
In buyer speech
“Before paying that blogger, check the engagement rate on the last ten posts — 500k followers with 200 likes screams bots.”
